Exciting Times for Sussex Pathways!

It's been a really exciting couple of weeks for Sussex Pathways as we've recently picked up the keys to our new project, Inspirational House. It's also an exciting time for me personally, as I've been given the role of house manager. I'll be involved in setting up the project over the coming months and, once the accommodation opens, I'll be responsible for its day-to-day running and supporting residents as they begin their journey with us.

The property is perfect for what we want to achieve. Downstairs, there's a spacious office, while the accommodation itself includes five resident bedrooms, each with its own private bathroom. The house also has a comfortable communal lounge and a large shared kitchen where residents, staff and volunteers can cook, eat and spend time together.

The kitchen opens out onto a large garden, where we hope to grow our own fruit and vegetables while teaching residents valuable gardening skills. At the end of the garden is an outhouse that needs a little love and attention, but once renovated it will become an incredible space for groups, activities and workshops.

We'll be delivering daily check in's and both Pathways to Change and Kintsugi groups from this space, we also hope to make it available to other charities and community organisations to run sessions and activities with our residents.

These groups won't just be for the residents of Inspirational House. Our longer-term vision is to open them up to people from the wider community as well. Having a separate building at the end of the garden means members of the public will be able to attend groups without needing to come through the main house, helping us maintain residents' privacy while creating a welcoming and inclusive community space.

At the moment, it's all systems go! We're currently gathering quotes for renovation works, security systems and improvements to the outhouse. A huge amount of work is also going into our Housing Benefit application with the council, with invaluable support from Helen - thank you, Helen!

Once the renovation work is complete, we can move on to the really fun part: making Inspirational House a warm, welcoming and homely environment for our first residents. Residents will be able to decorate their own rooms, choose their bedding and personalise their space so that it truly feels like home.

Each resident will be allocated both a dedicated key worker and a volunteer mentor who will support them throughout their six-month stay. Together, they will help residents move on successfully to longer-term accommodation, whether that is further supported housing or independent living. Many supported accommodation providers are unable to accept people straight from prison, so this project addresses a real gap in provision while helping residents become better placed to access future housing opportunities. Working with prison leavers can be challenging, which is why many organisations choose not to work with people immediately on release. However, supporting this client group is at the heart of what we do, and our experience working with prison leavers every day makes us ideally placed to deliver a project like this.

As part of their licence agreement, residents will be expected to contribute to maintaining the communal areas and garden. This is an important part of helping people develop the skills and confidence needed for independent living. Residents will have opportunities to learn practical skills such as cooking, budgeting and shopping, while also receiving support to attend appointments, engage with other services, and access education, training or employment opportunities.

The work carried out by our key workers and volunteer mentors will be very similar to the fantastic support that our volunteers already provide to clients in the community. However, we all know how difficult it can be for people to engage fully with support when they don't have stable accommodation. Inspirational House will provide residents with a safe and secure place to live, free from the pressures and uncertainty of street homelessness or unsuitable temporary accommodation. This stability will allow them to focus on their goals, engage with support, and make the adjustments needed to create lasting change.

This is an amazing opportunity for people leaving prison to reintegrate into the community with the added nurture, encouragement and support of Sussex Pathways staff and volunteers.

The next few months are going to be incredibly busy, but we're all so excited to get this project underway. We know that Inspirational House is going to make a real and lasting difference to the lives of the people we work with, and we can't wait to welcome our first residents through the door.
